We are pleased to introduce our Paediatric Intensive Rehabilitation service at Healing Touch Rehab Centre, a specialist service designed to support children and young people with complex neurological needs through focused, evidence-based therapy delivered at greater intensity.

Based at our new purpose-built clinic in Horsforth, Leeds, this service responds to a growing need for accessible intensive neurorehabilitation in the North of England. For many families and referrers, access to structured, short-term intensive programmes has traditionally required long-distance travel or fragmented care. Our aim is to offer a local, clinically robust alternative.

What is paediatric intensive rehabilitation?

Paediatric intensive rehabilitation involves delivering therapy at a higher frequency over a shorter, defined period. Rather than weekly sessions spread over many months, intensive programmes typically involve multiple sessions per week, allowing children to practise key movements, skills, and tasks repeatedly and with purpose.

This approach is underpinned by neuroplasticity, the brain’s ability to adapt and reorganise in response to repeated, task-specific practice. Research shows that for many children, particularly those with neurological injury or developmental conditions, increased therapy intensity can support meaningful functional gains that are harder to achieve through lower-frequency intervention alone.

At Healing Touch Rehab, intensive programmes are carefully planned, goal-driven, and tailored to the individual child, ensuring that therapy is purposeful rather than overwhelming.

Who is this service for?

Our Paediatric Intensive Rehabilitation service supports children and young people with a range of neurological presentations, including cerebral palsy, acquired and traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, birth asphyxia, and complex neurodevelopmental conditions.

Suitability is always assessed on an individual basis; intensive rehabilitation is not appropriate for every child at every stage, and our team works closely with families and referrers to determine whether this approach is the right fit, and if so, how it should be structured.

A multidisciplinary, outcome-focused approach

Intensive rehabilitation at Healing Touch Rehab is delivered by a multidisciplinary team of experienced clinicians, including neurological physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and speech and language therapists. Each programme begins with a comprehensive assessment to identify priorities, establish realistic goals, and agree on expected outcomes.

Therapy may include a combination of hands-on intervention, functional practice, and the use of specialist rehabilitation technology to support repetition, safety, and measurable progress. Family involvement is a key part of the process, helping to ensure understanding, carryover, and continuity beyond the clinic setting.

Our Clinical Director, Kay Ganguly, explains: “Intensive rehabilitation allows us to focus therapy where it can have the greatest impact. By increasing frequency and working collaboratively with families, we can support progress that is meaningful, measurable, and relevant to everyday life.”

Technology supporting intensive rehabilitation

Specialist rehabilitation technology plays an important supporting role within our paediatric intensive rehabilitation programmes, helping to increase repetition, improve safety, and provide objective insight into progress.

Our intensive programmes may incorporate LiteGait® and GaitSens® systems to support gait training and analysis. Together the systems provide a secure, fall-free environment for children to practise standing, walking, and functional activities using partial weight-bearing support and the technology allows clinicians to assess walking speed, step length, cadence, symmetry, and weight-bearing in real time, supporting informed clinical decision-making and outcome measurement.

For children with limited independent mobility, Innowalk Pro is used to facilitate dynamic, supported standing and repetitive limb movement. This robotic system enables smooth transitions between sitting and standing and allows children to engage in active, weight-bearing movement that supports posture, endurance, and motor learning.

Programmes may also include Galileo Smart Coaching Therapy, which uses variable vibration frequencies to enhance muscle activation, coordination, and motor control, alongside THERA-Trainer systems such as Balo and Tigo. These devices support balance training, trunk control, and assisted or active cycling in a safe and engaging way, helping children develop the postural stability and strength needed for everyday activities.

All technology and equipment at Healing Touch Rehab is used purposefully and in combination with hands-on therapy, ensuring it enhances clinical input rather than replacing it. The combination of technology and equipment we use is always guided by individual assessment, goals, and tolerance, with a focus on functional outcomes and meaningful participation.

Delivered at Healing Touch Rehab Centre

Our Paediatric Intensive Rehabilitation service is delivered at our centre in Horsforth; a dedicated outpatient facility designed to support children, young people, and families throughout their rehabilitation journey. The centre brings together specialist clinics, advanced rehabilitation equipment, and a calm, child-friendly environment under one roof.

Alongside intensive programmes, we also offer a range of specialist paediatric and adult neurological services, supporting continuity of care as children grow and their needs change.
