Music Therapy at Healing Touch Rehab
We are delighted to introduce music therapy as part of the therapeutic services offered at Healing Touch Rehab.
Music therapy is increasingly recognised as an effective intervention within neurological rehabilitation. It is a research-based profession regulated by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and has been shown to support functional rehabilitation, enhance social engagement, and improve quality of life for individuals living with the effects of brain injury and neurological conditions.
At Healing Touch Rehab, Neurologic Music Therapy is delivered as part of our multidisciplinary team approach, working alongside physiotherapy and other therapeutic services to provide holistic and person-centred care. Neurologic Music Therapy is a clinically validated approach that uses music and musical elements of rhythm, melody and harmony to facilitate rehabilitation of motor, cognitive, and speech functions in individuals with neurological disorders. It is grounded in neuroscience and involves structured, goal-oriented interventions.
We view music therapy as a flexible and responsive approach, tailored carefully to meet each individual’s needs. Sessions focus on supporting areas of growth while also recognising and celebrating each person’s strengths, interests, and existing abilities.
How Can Music Therapy Help?
Communication
Music therapy builds on an individual’s existing communication strengths and preferences. By focusing on what a person can do, as well as the areas where support is needed, therapy aims to maximise opportunities for expression while working towards achievable, person-centred goals.
For individuals who have lost language or developed communication differently following brain injury, music can provide a powerful means of expression. Musical interaction allows personality, emotion, and identity to be communicated, while also encouraging the development of new communication skills in an engaging and motivating way.
Psychological Wellbeing
Living with a brain injury can bring complex emotional and psychological challenges. Music therapy provides a safe and supportive space where individuals can explore their experiences, reconnect with aspects of identity, and process trauma.
Therapy is tailored to each person, respecting their musical identity, culture, personal history, and life experiences, enabling meaningful and therapeutic engagement.
Movement and Physical Rehabilitation
Music therapy can play an important role in supporting movement and physical rehabilitation. Research shows that music can help improve mobility, coordination, motor control, and limb function.
At Healing Touch Rehab, our music therapist can work collaboratively with our physiotherapists to deliver integrated therapy sessions. These combine the motivational and rhythmic qualities of music with targeted physiotherapy exercises to support movement retraining and rehabilitation goals.
Cognition
Music activates widespread areas of the brain, supporting improvements in attention, memory, problem-solving, and cognitive processing.
Music therapy can stimulate neuroplasticity and contribute to cognitive recovery for individuals living with conditions such as stroke, traumatic brain injury (TBI), or neurodegenerative disorders.
Social Connection
Music therapy encourages shared experiences that help build confidence, connection, and meaningful interaction with others.
Both individual and group sessions provide opportunities for people to form relationships, develop listening skills, and experience a sense of community. Music therapy not only supports development but also allows individuals to share their existing strengths, express their personality, and experience themselves as valued members of a group.
Combining Expertise: Music Therapy and Physical Rehab
The relationship between music and movement is deeply embedded in both everyday life and clinical practice. From running to a motivating playlist to instinctively tapping our foot to a rhythm, music naturally encourages and organises movement.
In rehabilitation settings, carefully structured musical elements can be combined with physiotherapy to help clients initiate, sustain, and develop movement patterns more effectively. Research strongly supports the use of music therapy alongside physiotherapy to support improvements in gait, coordination, and motor recovery.
At Healing Touch Rehab, our therapists work collaboratively to integrate these approaches. By combining musical structure and motivation with targeted physiotherapy techniques, we aim to maximise engagement and support meaningful rehabilitation outcomes.
As part of our commitment to delivering the highest standard of care, we embrace creative, flexible, and evidence-based multidisciplinary working. This ensures that therapy is shaped around the needs, strengths, and interests of every individual we support.
