This week, our team successfully completed Level 1 Makaton communication training. Led by our certified Makaton Tutor and Ambassador, Helen Whaling, we enjoyed a day of learning and celebrating inclusion.

Being Makaton-trained is a stepping stone for our team to strengthen inclusive communication within our services.

What is Makaton?

Makaton is a communication programme that uses a multi-modal approach to support communication. For rehabilitation professionals working with individuals with complex needs, this is an invaluable tool that enhances our ability to connect, understand, and respond to each individual’s unique communication style, promoting greater engagement, autonomy, and quality of care.

Investing in inclusive communication skills like Makaton is part of our ongoing commitment to delivering person-centred, accessible, and effective rehabilitation services.

Makaton Tutor, Helen Whaling, commented:

“Everyone deserves to be understood. This training helps ensure that no voice goes unheard.”

The Makaton service provided by Healing Touch supports and enables our clients and our team to collaborate efficiently with individuals with communication difficulties.

We also collaborate with the wider multidisciplinary team (MDT) to provide tailored training sessions, improving collaboration and understanding of the needs of individuals with communication disorders.

 Kay Ganguly, Clinical Director said:

“Including Makaton as part of our holistic rehabilitation to clients with communication difficulties, we aim to create a more inclusive and Makaton-friendly environment, allowing effective interactions across all stages of the rehabilitation journey.”
